He has also taught at the City University of New York Graduate School, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a graduate of Princeton University, received his Ph.D. from Harvard, and has been awarded fellowships by the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars, the American Council of Learned Societies, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. He is the authorof Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression, for which he won the American Book Award in 1983. He is coauthor of America in the Twentieth Century and has published many articles, essays, and reviews.
